Peripheral pump — what is it?
A peripheral pump (also known as a regenerative pump) is a centrifugal pump with additional performance characteristics. Its main component is an impeller equipped with a set of short blades located around the outer circumference of the pump. Thanks to the appropriate positioning of the entire mechanism, the impeller rotates in a concentric collection channel.
What is the operating principle of a peripheral pump? It turns out that the repeated circulation of liquid between the impeller blade array and the collection channel increases the pressure along the path from the suction port to the discharge port. This is why peripheral pumps achieve the greatest pumping heights—up to 200 meters per stage. This is exceptional among other centrifugal pumps of a similar type. In addition, peripheral pumps are characterized by the lowest specific-speed values. Their main features also include a steep QH curve and the ability to operate even when the liquid contains a large amount of gas or intense cavitation occurs. It is worth remembering that peripheral pumps should always be started with the discharge valve open.
Main applications
Due to their design, peripheral pumps cannot be used in all conditions. Their mechanism operates properly only with clean water, meaning water free of contaminants, including various types of debris, solid particles, abrasive particles, and fibers. If the elements mentioned above are present in the pumped liquid, the mechanism may malfunction or become completely damaged. It is also important that the water does not contain harmful chemicals that could cause corrosion.
Considering the conditions above, where can we use a peripheral pump? It is particularly useful in households, greenhouses, holiday cottages, and small-scale industry. It is ideal for irrigating gardens and lawns, as well as filling and emptying water tanks. Peripheral pumps can also be used in car washes, fountains, and swimming pools—in other words, anywhere water needs to be supplied under pressure.

The design can be divided into two main parts: the hydraulic section and the motor required for operation. As mentioned above, a peripheral pump is a centrifugal pump, usually single-stage and monoblock, with horizontal-axis suction and vertical upward discharge. Most standard models are based on components such as a suction port, cast-iron housing, pump impeller, ceramic gland, rubber deflector, ball bearings, a stainless-steel shaft, a discharge port, a cast-iron cover-connector, and a terminal box.
