Water is the foundation of our life on Earth. Of course, when we use this word, we do not always mean something that we can use for drinking. Much more often, we are referring to a liquid used in various areas of industry. To extract or move water even more efficiently, a range of complex devices called pumps has been developed. Although their design is based on basic principles, it varies depending on the model. This is the case, among others, with single-stage and multistage pumps. How is each type constructed? And what are the main differences between them? We discuss this topic in our article.

Basic differences

The main differences are already indicated by their names. Single-stage pumps are equipped with one impeller, which gives them a smaller and simpler design. A multistage pump, on the other hand, has two or more impellers. Each successive impeller increases the pressure generated by the device and improves the entire process. It is therefore logical that a two-stage pump will generate higher pressure than a single-stage pump of the same type. When choosing the right tool for our needs, we should analyze its function and our requirements. It is worth remembering that pump selection is based on its characteristic pressure and overall capacity values.

Design considerations

The differences between single-stage and multistage pumps can be seen in their construction diagrams. The first type discussed, namely the single-stage pump, is often considered simple, and achieving high efficiency is not its key purpose. The situation is completely different with the second group. Multistage pumps consume significantly more electrical energy, which is why efficiency is very important in their case. To increase it, advanced methods and complex mathematical calculations are used during production, determining the device's effectiveness.

Single-stage pumps – characteristics

Single-stage pumps are versatile devices with many applications. Their effectiveness has been confirmed when pumping both clean water and water described as dirty—meaning liquid containing impurities of various fractions. These pumps can be divided into several basic types. One of them is single-stage centrifugal pumps, in which the impeller is mounted either conventionally or between bearings. Another type is PJM single-stage monoblock pumps, which are ideal for use in district heating and other installations, such as industrial systems.

What are the main advantages of this type of device? Above all, thanks to their simple design, single-stage pumps are durable and robust tools that comply with applicable standards. They have a lightweight construction and operate with motors suitable for a wide range of applications. They also allow users to select a shaft seal appropriate for specific conditions, as well as an impeller made of cast iron or bronze.

Single-stage pump – examples

On our website, you will find many examples of single-stage pumps that will meet your expectations. One excellent option is the JET100A pump, a single-stage, self-priming centrifugal pump equipped with a system that increases its suction capacity. Full performance and maximum efficiency are achieved through the use of a so-called Venturi tube. The entire unit is made of durable cast iron and is powered by single-phase electricity. The JET100A pump is available with additional pressure-booster equipment (including a pressure switch, pressure gauge, five-way discharge outlet, and power cable with plug), as well as in an automated version. The latter option features additional protection against harmful dry running.

Another option is the CPM INOX range, consisting of single-stage, normally primed centrifugal pumps designed for pumping non-aggressive liquids containing solid impurities at a concentration of 0.27 kg/m3. This solution is adapted for continuous operation, making it suitable for agriculture, both for irrigation and drainage. It is also used in air conditioning systems and in households for increasing water pressure.

Multistage pumps – main features

Multistage pumps are one example of a centrifugal pump, in which—as the name suggests—the key structural element is a bladed impeller. Where can these complex solutions be found? Above all, in various types of water installations, including systems supplying industrial plants and service facilities such as car washes. They also perform excellently in heating installations. Their advantages include high efficiency and a low failure rate, which translates into reliable operation.

Multistage pump – our range

Our range also includes high-quality multistage pumps that ensure convenient operation and high efficiency. One of the available models is the HP1500 INOX pump, a multistage, self-priming centrifugal pump. The device is manufactured in accordance with the highest standards, as demonstrated by both its design and the materials used in production. The pump is intended to supply clean water to single-family homes, allotments, farms, and industrial plants. Its advantage is the ability to operate efficiently at elevated temperatures. The pump is available in an automated version and as a complete pressure-booster set.

Another option is the MH POMPY family of multistage pumps. Their design incorporates a Venturi suction system that supports the device's suction process and provides a suction capacity of up to 8 meters. This is a quiet pump, ideal for single-family homes and agricultural applications.
