Choosing how to distribute water in a single-family home is a decision you will live with for decades. The arrangement of pipes hidden in the screed determines whether turning on the shower will reduce the water pressure in the nearby tap and how long you will wait for hot water. Contractors often reduce this issue solely to the amount of materials used and labor costs. In this guide, we go step by step through how the installation will behave in practice, how the individual systems differ, and how to plan circulation intelligently.
Four water distribution systems for the home
Two solutions are most commonly used in single-family homes, although four layouts are distinguished in installation practice. They differ in their susceptibility to pressure drops, safety, and ease of routing circulation.
Tee system (parallel) is the most popular layout, in which shorter branches run from the main pipe (trunk line) to individual taps. Its main advantage is the smaller amount of piping required. However, it requires maintaining appropriate diameters (the trunk line must be larger than the branches) and making connections beneath the floor, which makes repairs more difficult in the event of a failure.
Manifold system is based on a manifold cabinet. Water is supplied to the manifold, and from there a separate, continuous pipe runs to each tap. The advantages are no connections beneath the screed and more stable pressure, because the draw-off points have less effect on one another. However, the design uses considerably more piping, and the manifold must be placed centrally so that the length of an individual run does not exceed the recommended 8 meters.
Ring system (including the Tichelmann loop) is a solution in which each point is supplied from two sides. The closed loop means that drawing water from any tap forces it to move throughout the entire installation. This is the most expensive system, but it balances pressure automatically and provides the best protection against water stagnation.
A tee system and a series system are not the same
Many installers and construction guides use the terms “tee system” and “series system” interchangeably. This is a mistake worth catching at the planning stage when discussing the work with a professional. In a tee system, the draw-off point is located on a branch from the main pipe. In a series layout, the pipe passes directly through one tap (using fixed tees) and continues to the next.
A series layout causes a constant drop in pressure and water flow at each successive draw-off point. As a result, it has very limited application in modern single-family homes. A correctly sized parallel tee system is an entirely different installation solution.
Why does the pressure drop when a second tap is turned on?
Do you know the problem: you are standing in the shower, someone turns on the water in the kitchen, and your stream suddenly weakens and becomes hot? In a poorly designed tee system, this is an everyday occurrence. It follows directly from pressure losses, which depend on the length of the pipes, the number of elbows and tees, and their diameter.
According to installation standards, including PN-EN 806-3, the water velocity in main pipes should not exceed 2 m/s. The designer converts this into loading units (LU) and selects diameters that account for simultaneous water usage. If the cross-sections are too small, the water is “divided” at the expense of comfort.
However, if you are sure that the pipe installation has been made correctly and the pressure still drops dramatically when two taps are open, the cause may lie at the source. The culprit may be excessively low pressure in the municipal water supply or well (under regulations, there should be at least 1 bar at the draw-off point). The solution is then a correctly selected pressure tank set or booster pump, which will guarantee household members stable access to water regardless of the supply conditions.
Domestic hot water circulation (DHW) – convenience or necessity?
Do you wait at the tap for several seconds for the water to turn from cold to hot? Circulation prevents this. It is an additional pipe (the return line) with a circulation pump that forces water to circulate between the storage tank and the taps. The choice of piping system is crucial here.
In a tee system, circulation is relatively simple to install: a common return pipe is run from the farthest draw-off point. In a manifold system, the situation is more difficult. It requires routing the circulation line directly to the manifold cabinet or using a third manifold and additional pipes to each tap, which often creates problems with balancing the system (return water takes the shortest route, bypassing distant taps).
Although building regulations do not require circulation in single-family homes, an engineering rule is commonly applied: if a pipe to a tap holds more than 3 liters of water, its circulation should be forced. Standing water at a temperature of 25–45 degrees is not only a waste of cold water discharged into the drain, but also an ideal environment for the growth of dangerous Legionella bacteria.
How to select and install a circulation pump correctly
Domestic DHW circulation generally requires a low flow rate and a head of up to 1.5 meters. However, costs can be an issue. A pump running continuously around the clock generates huge standby heat losses and high electricity bills. That is why making the right choice can save several hundred złoty per year. What should you know before installation?
- Choose a pump with an intelligent motor. Wet-rotor pumps with permanent-magnet motors have become standard. They consume only a few watts of energy and offer self-adaptive operating modes that automatically adjust performance to the system’s current demand.
- Use time schedules. The greatest savings come from switching the pump off at night and during the hours when household members are away. Look for models with a built-in programmer or digital panel that allows you to easily set daily operating cycles and temperature thresholds.
- Remember the check valve. A circulation pump is always installed on the return pipe, just before the storage tank, and must be accompanied by a check valve. Without the valve, opening a tap will cause the system to draw cold, cooled water from the return line, defeating the entire purpose of the installation.
