Sewing twine – what is it and where is it used?
Sewing twine is a durable, thick cord (often made of flax or hemp) used, among other things, in leatherworking, upholstery, and older sealing techniques. Sewing twine cord or sewing twine thread is sometimes used for hand-sewing thick fabrics, and in its technical form also for auxiliary bindings. Black sewing twine or thick sewing twine are typical versions used, for example, in shoemaking or carpentry.
Hemp packing – classic sealing for hydraulic threads
Hydraulic hemp packing, also known as flax packing, consists of plant fibers (most commonly flax) used for sealing threaded connections in water systems. Its main advantages are flexibility and resistance to temperature and pressure.
Typical applications:
- pipe packing – used on threads to prevent leaks,
- packing and paste – the classic set: fiber plus packing paste,
- hemp packing and paste – work together to provide better sealing.
Hemp packing vs. modern sealants
Although Teflon-type sealants (PTFE) are increasingly used today, pipe packing remains popular – especially in metal installations, where it fits well into the thread. Thanks to its natural structure, it also adheres well to sealing pastes.

Pipe packing is used in 4 steps:
- Clean the thread of dirt and grease.
- Wind the packing in the direction of the thread – do not use too much, so the connection does not split.
- Apply packing paste evenly to the surface of the fibers.
- Screw the connection together tightly, tightening it with a wrench.
What is the difference between flax packing and Teflon?
Flax packing is a natural material that adheres better to metal threads and is used with paste. Teflon (PTFE) is a synthetic tape that is faster to install but less resistant to high temperatures and pressures.
